Dogmedia is a publishing initiative that began in 2004 and is currently on hold. It's not really a small press (we don't take submissions so please don't send us any). At this stage, more akin to an artist's shopfront.

The name dogmedia is derived from 'Daughter of Galavant (media)' -- Galavant was a window gallery that operated from the kitchen of 110 Wilson Street, Newtown in Sydney in the early 1990s.

Galavant was comprised of a hinged wooden box placed inside a window that looked directly onto Watkins Street. The inner walls of the box were painted black and a light bulb inside allowed it to be lit up for passersby to see what was showing 24hrs a day.

Exhibits changed every three weeks, and included work from a range of people -- some were practicing artists, and some hadn't done anything 'arty' since school. Enthusiasm was the main selection criterion, and the exhibits were always amazing. Everything from small waterfalls flowing over rocks, to evocations of a garbage-filled section of the bay, to a unique Twelve Days of Christmas exhibit (imaginative interpretations added each day in the lead up to Christmas).

Dogmedia aims to continue that tradition of do-it-yourself, artist-run initiatives, hoping to bring a bit more challenge, creativity and fun into daily life, and to encourage and inspire others to do the same.
